Building a man-made sun (star) on earth to provide unlimited clean energy is the most basic description for the ITER magnetic fusion reactor under construction in Cadarache, France. It will pulse heat/burn a plasma mixture to 150 million °C (10 x the sun’s core) by nuclear fusion to produce 500 Megawatts of thermal energy. This would in turn provide steam turbine generated electricity, similar to current fission plants but without the long lived, unstable waste generation. The burning plasma revolves inside a donut shaped vacuum chamber where it must ignited by and then controlled by a system of superconducting magnets operating at 4 °Kelvin/-269 °C. The Central Solenoid magnet subsystem at the reactor center will provide a pulsed magnetic field to initiate and then help stabilize the plasma burn. General Atomics was selected by the U.S. ITER Program Office to build and test the Central Solenoid in San Diego, CA.
